Rod Hunt was commissioned by Pentagram in Austin, Texas to illustrate the campus map for Santa Clara University, a comprehensive Jesuit, Catholic university located in California's Silicon Valley. The aim was to highlight some of the significant ways that the campus was transformed with new buildings and facilities built over the last two decades while Joe Sugg served as Associate VP of University Operations. See how the Santa Clara campus has been transformed in the past two decades—in dozens of ways big and marvelous. Just a few of those are highlighted here. One of the quiet forces behind them: Joe Sugg, who served Santa Clara for 19 years and retired in December as associate vice president of University Operations. He built; he and his staff kept the campus lovely and made it more so. They turned SCU into a leader in sustainability. (Joe credits sensibilities he learned growing up on a farm in Arkansas; his parents were educators.) Unbeknownst to many here: He’s a retired Air Force colonel. He flew jets in Vietnam, and at the end of the Cold War, as a base commander in Arizona, he oversaw demolition of missiles for which he’d helped develop control systems years before; they were no longer needed. It meant a great deal to him to see the dedication of SCU Veteran’s Plaza in November 2014. He also adores the Wall of Climbing Roses that runs for half a mile on the edge of campus: 200 heritage roses, some quite rare. His wife, Marianne, was the force behind that. Thank you both.

The East Coast Main Line (ECML) is one of the UK's vital rail routes. Carrying over 20 million passengers a year, it connects London with East and West Yorkshire, the North East of England and Scotland.’ King's Uncrossed. Kings Cross Station needs work: whilst it looks like modern inside, the tracks out back are a different story. In 2019 works started to untangle the tracks, simplifying journeys in and out of the station, and bringing order to the longest line in the nation’s rail network. Passengers that frequent Kings Cross Station may find it difficult to understand why further work is being done - at one of the most modern stations in the country. By using a visual language that explains the current state of the tracks, we’ll help passengers visualise the work that we are doing and the consequential benefit. The campaign illustration will evolve over the duration of the works showing the simplification of the tracks once work is completed in 2021.

Materials Matter: Rare Earths. The Restart Project
Rod Hunt was commissioned by The Restart Project to illustrate Materials Matter, educational resources to learn about the materials inside our electronics and their significance. Through hands-on activity, we reveal hidden environmental impacts of mobile phones and other electronics. Participants of all ages can learn about the raw materials inside electronics by reading our leaflet and using our cards to pair with mobile phone components. These materials focus on a specific group of “critical” raw materials, of significant economic importance, presenting a supply risk. As our electronics have become more miniaturised, they have become more materially complex. Sometimes it is hard to envision everything that went into getting the materials in our products. If we challenge ourselves, we can learn how land, the environment and people are impacted by the production of the things we all buy. The Restart Project is a people-powered social enterprise that aims to fix our relationship with electronics.
